Curtin University Exchange Murals
What an honour to be given the opportunity to create artwork for the launch of Curtin University new Exchange precinct! Completed early May, the two murals measuring 50m long and 35m long are probably the biggest artworks I’ve painted to date.
The ground plane artwork aims to intrigue, inviting interaction and discussion. I love that modern contemporary abstraction is open to interpretation and I appreciate that every viewer will have a different experience. I hope it offers a positive experience as people pass through the space. With many people choosing to look down as they walk, it will definitely be hard to miss!
Largely based around energy flow, connection and playfulness, the biomorphic imagery depicts knowledge sharing, networks and community. The intent is for the design to tell a unique narrative which captures the vibrancy and energy of university life.
Connecting each mural from one end to the other is an ‘energy’ line which has become somewhat of a signature in my work. This pays homage to Koorliny Way meaning ‘movement’ in Noongar.
I give humble thanks to all involved in helping to bring the project to fruition including Annette; Greg and the team at Curtin; painting assistance from a top crew Sean, Sam + Seantelle Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat and offer positive comments. Interacting with the public and local community is an aspect of being a public artist (and storyteller) I really enjoy. The project certainly provided a decent work out with the hundreds of litres of paint we rolled on!
The stunning drone footage by @jimbobthehomie shows how the artworks successfully integrate with the site and architectural surrounds.
