The Milk Bar Mural, The Civic Hotel Inglewood
A couple of years ago I presented my solo show INNOMINATE at the Civic Hotel Ingelwood. Taking over a couple of the large downstairs rooms, I painted up a storm. I was also fortunate to score an amazing studio upstairs and worked in the space for the next year. The pub was an interesting environment to work in and suited my musical sensibilities. During that time I was given free rein to get loose in the Civic’s band room the Milk Bar which was one of the most fun projects I’ve worked on. It’s a very obvious nod to Basquiat one of the most celebrated painters of the Neo-Expressionism art movement. I’ve always greatly admired his deeply expressive style and iconography.
Scattered along the wall are some of the original creepy characters I’ve been drawing for years, dubbed MONSTEROSITY (my fascination and love of monsters). The bands whose lyrics are included: Beastie Boys | Guns n Roses | ACDC | Nirvana | Tame Impala | David Bowie. I haven’t had the opportunity to paint any other murals in this loose, expressive style which is in alignment with my studio paintings. Anyway, like a lot of projects, I’ve never shared this one before (as more often than not, life is too busy to live it online on social media ).
None of this would have been possible without the support of the super awesome hotel manager Mel – thank you!
