Town of Claremont ‘Swannie’ Ground Mural
Presenting ‘Swannie’ my public art installation for the Town of Claremont. A 71m ground mural in Claremont Crescent, Swanbourne it’s a celebration of local history paying homage to the past.
The tile outside Frockk shop provided initial inspiration, with research of previous shop owners and the local area uncovering some interesting notes for development:
- The much loved Art Deco Swanbourne Hotel, demolished August 1999
- ‘Conversation’ lollies (old confectioners shop) – the village community is about conversation and connection
- 1920’s bootmaker and haberdashery shops
- Claremont Bath tower at Freshwater Bay
- Claremont Football Premiership 1964
- Claremont Crescent Dairy, operated by various families over the years
- The Perth Royal Show at the nearby Claremont Showgrounds has been entertaining since 1834
I enjoyed trawling through the archives of historical photographs and reading articles, books and maps including ‘A History of Claremont Crescent’ by Liz Belt and online content by architect Neil Cownie. Thanks for the assistance Claremont Museum.
