Whitford Library Community Mural/AIR
As artist in residence at the @city_of_joondalup Whitford library, I was honoured to work with all ages of the local community and school groups at Springfield Primary School, facilitating a series of creative workshops. Research of local stories and those generously shared by locals, along with the creative output from participants was used for the basis of the designs. Thanks to @deptlgsc and @lotterywest for the funding through the Creative Communities COVID-19 Recovery Program for making the project possible.
It’s been a rewarding time connecting with the local community, examining Joondalup’s past, exploring the area’s present day, sharing the story of my creative practice with the public during an artist talk and working with the supportive team at the library. The outcome being a series of murals inside and out at the library plus a short documentary featuring some of the local stories. There’s been some lovely feedback already on the new artworks brightening up the library walls.
Public art plays an important role in stimulating the imagination and encouraging community connection. Transforming spaces with artwork which relate a unique narrative of place is a role I’m truly grateful to be entrusted with. 😊🙏🏻
