Currambine Station Underpass – Currents

Public Transport Authority Urban Art Program
Commissioned as part of the PTA’s Urban Art Program curatorial vision, Currents transforms the Currambine Station underpass into a layered visual journey – reflecting the region’s wetlands, seasonal rhythms and the daily movement of commuters.

Currents of Water, People and Connection
The concept draws on three intertwined themes:

  • Currents of water and weather – seasonal flows, glistening change, and the shifting ecology of local wetlands.
  • Currents of people – the daily rhythm of commuters, the flow of bodies through shared space.
  • Currents of energy and connection – repeated journeys and the invisible ties between place
    and community.

Designed for Repeated Encounters
The mural was created to engage people every time they pass through. Larger overhead elements create an immediate visual presence, guiding the flow of the underpass. These are balanced with areas of fine detail, textures and smaller patterns for closer inspection – rewarding those who pause with moments of delight. This layering ensures that a commuter might notice something new each day, turning routine travel into a more mindful, visually rich experience.

Community Connection
Painting on site was orally rewarding – the positive feedback from passers-by was constant! People stopped to share their appreciation, express how much they loved the transformation, and even tell stories about the local area. That level of direct community interaction reinforced why I value public art: it becomes part of people’s everyday lives, sparking conversations and building a shared sense of place.

Design Language
Flowing lines and abstract forms reference the lakes, wetlands and limestone geology that define the Currambine landscape. Layers of colour and pattern evoke native flora and fauna – from paperbark trees and bulrushes to birdlife – while textured geometric shapes echo the stratification of limestone, anchoring the work to the site’s unique environment. Subtle seasonal colour transitions invite repeated discovery, offering both calm and connection.
