Youth Mural Mentorship – Victoria Park Arts Season 2023 / Vicinity Group
Town of Victoria Park Arts Season | Woolworths, Victoria Park
I facilitated a Youth Mural Mentorship project for the Town of Victoria Park, mentoring emerging artists Charlotte Robinson and Georgia Sherwood, guiding them through the end-to-end delivery of a community public art project. This included community workshop facilitation and onsite painting.
Mentorship & Community Engagement
The project centred around skill-sharing and professional insight, offering Charlotte and Georgia the opportunity to experience the full scope of a public art commission. Together, we hosted community painting day workshops, inviting locals to contribute directly to the mural’s creation. I also delivered an artist talk, sharing my own practice and the broader role of public art in fostering connection and cultural vibrancy.
Contemporary, Fun and Dynamic
The mural – one of my personal favourites – is a bold, contemporary work that celebrates vibrancy, inclusivity and local identity. The design is a nod to Vic Park’s street art culture, nightlife and gritty urban edge, blending my contemporary abstract style with the area’s creative energy.
Designed for Participation
The composition was deliberately designed for community involvement, balancing large colour blocks for accessibility with fine details for more confident painters. This ensured that everyone, regardless of skill level, could contribute meaningfully to the final outcome.
An Invitating Landmark
The mural adds a vibrant, site-responsive landmark to the streetscape, enhancing the local street art mural trail and reflecting the spirit of Victoria Park’s diverse community. It’s an artwork that invites curiosity, celebrates connection and stands as a testament to what can be achieved when professional artists and community members create together.
